  • Navigate to your BigCommerce dashboard.
  • Go to Products > Export.
  • Select Default under Export Template and File Format Options. Then, click Continue.

Download your Products file

  • Lastly, don’t forget to use WebDAV (this app allows you to upload files to store’s server) to connect to your store. Then, drag and drop the “product_images” to your desktop.

Download the product_images folder

While we ensure a perfect data transfer from BigCommerce to Shopify, we still recommend creating a backup of your store data for extra peace of mind.. It will definitely be your savior when things go wrong, and you want to undo your action.

2. Create a new Shopify store

Here are the steps to create a new Shopify store:
  • Sign up for an Shopify account.
  • After that, Shopify will ask you some information about your business, such as product type, location, etc. You can skip all the questions and choose the most suitable signup option.
  • It will take you straight to the Shopify dashboard once you’ve filled in your information. Now you can get down to migrating BigCommerce to Shopify.

3. Review and clean up your source data

Before migrating, take time to review the data in your BigCommerce store. Remove outdated products, inactive customer accounts, and any content you no longer need. This helps you avoid transferring unnecessary data to Shopify. A cleaner database also makes your new store easier to manage after migration.

4. Disable Shopify notifications

Before the migration starts, it is best to temporarily disable Shopify notifications. This helps prevent customers from receiving unexpected emails during the import process. For example, imported orders or account-related actions may trigger automatic messages if notifications stay on. Once the migration is complete and everything has been checked, you can enable them again.

5. Understand BigCommerce API limitations

BigCommerce migration relies on API access, so rate limits may affect how fast your data can be transferred. If your store contains a large volume of products, orders, or images, the migration may take longer than expected. You should also make sure your BigCommerce store uses HTTPS for a secure connection. For highly customized stores, additional development may be needed to extract and migrate all data correctly.

What do you need to do after migrating BigCommerce to Shopify?

1. Thoroughly review your migrated data

  • Check your products and variants first, including titles, descriptions, images, prices, SKUs, inventory, and option setups such as size or color.
  • Review your customer accounts to make sure names, emails, addresses, and account access work as expected.
  • Inspect a sample of orders and confirm line items, totals, statuses, and customer details are correct.
  • Review all CMS pages and blog posts for layout issues, broken images, formatting inconsistencies, and internal links that may still point to old BigCommerce URLs.

2. Configure your Shopify store properly

  • Install the essential Shopify apps you need after migration, especially for features that are not handled natively in the same way.
  • Set up your payment gateways, shipping zones, shipping rates, and carriers before launch so customers can complete checkout without issues.
  • Review your tax settings carefully and make sure they match the regions where you sell.
  • Customize your theme and branding so your Shopify storefront matches your brand identity and delivers a consistent customer experience.
  • Connect your custom domain to Shopify and update the DNS settings correctly.

3. Optimize your store for SEO

  • Double-check all important 301 redirects from your old BigCommerce URLs to the new Shopify URLs.
  • Review and improve your SEO settings on Shopify, including meta titles, meta descriptions, and image alt text.
  • Reconnect or update Google Analytics and Google Search Console after migration.
  • Submit your new Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console so search engines can crawl and index your new store structure more efficiently.

4. Perform comprehensive testing before launch

  • Place several test orders to verify checkout, payment methods, tax calculations, shipping logic, and order confirmation emails.
  • Test customer account functions such as registration, login, and access to order history.
  • Check your storefront on mobile devices, tablets, and desktop to make sure the design remains consistent across screen sizes.
  • Monitor your store speed and loading performance, since site speed directly affects both user experience and SEO.

5. Go live and monitor closely

  • Launch your Shopify store only after you are confident that the data, design, and key functions are all working correctly.
  • In the first few weeks after launch, monitor traffic, conversions, checkout behavior, and error reports closely to catch issues early.
  • If new orders, customers, or other records were added to your BigCommerce store during the migration window, plan a Recent Data Migration or follow-up sync so your Shopify store stays complete and up to date.

Popular Questions about BigCommerce to Shopify Migration

Not seeing your question listed here? Contact Us for the quickest answer.

How much does it cost to migrate from BigCommerce to Shopify?

The cost of migrating from BigCommerce to Shopify depends on the number of entities you want to migrate. The more data you have, the higher the migration cost. You can estimate the cost HERE.

Should you hire a professional to migrate from BigCommerce to Shopify, or do it manually?

Because the migration process requires technical knowledge, including store setup and post-migration data verification, I recommend using LitExtension’s BigCommerce to Shopify migration service. Our team of experts will handle the BigCommerce to Shopify migration for you quickly, accurately, and securely.

Why can’t migrate order date from BigCommerce to Shopify?

When importing orders into Shopify, the platform does not let third-party apps keep the original order creation timestamp (created_at). Shopify automatically assigns this value through its API, and it cannot be manually replaced.

To address this, LitExtension maps the order’s original timing to the processed_at field instead. Since this field shows when the order was handled or completed, it serves as the closest available alternative. It will be displayed in your Shopify orders and is commonly used in reporting and analytics.

Can I migrate my BigCommerce blog posts to Shopify?

Yes. You can migrate Blog posts from BigCommerce to Shopify. You can migrate Title, Full Description, SEO URLs, and images.

Can I keep my BigCommerce store running during migration?

Yes. There’s no downtime if you use BigCommerce to Shopify migration services at LitExtension. You can still receive new orders and customers information during migration process.

Are customers notified by any Shopify email notifications during the moving process?

Typically, Shopify doesn’t send customer email notifications during migration. We also advise turning off any third-party email or shipping apps in your Shopify store to prevent them from automatically sending messages to customers while transferring orders.

Which one is better Shopify or BigCommerce?

Depending on the purpose of each business, you can choose Shopify or BigCommerce. Between BigCommerce and Shopify, no platform is better than the other because each platform has its own advantages:

    • Shopify is user-friendly with a large app ecosystem, ideal for ease of use and customization.
    • BigCommerce offers robust built-in features and flexibility, suitable for businesses with complex requirements or existing tech infrastructure.

    Do you support multilingual Shopify?

We provide professional support for transferring multilingual data to and from Shopify. To ensure a successful migration to your Shopify store, make sure all necessary languages are enabled in Settings > Languages. Since this process requires expertise, we recommend relying on our team to manage it for you.

Do customers get Shopify email notifications during the migration process?

No, Shopify generally does not send email notifications to customers during migration. However, we advise turning off third-party email or shipping apps in your Shopify store to prevent them from automatically sending messages during the order transfer.

Does LitExtension migrate purchase history from BigCommerce to Shopify?

Yes, LitExtension is able to migrate purchase history, also known as order history from BigCommerce to Shopify with a high level of accuracy. That said, in Shopify, order history can refer to two different types of data, so it is important to understand the difference:

      • Customer order history: This refers to the full record of orders linked to a specific customer. Because Shopify supports this data structure well, LitExtension can transfer it smoothly.

    AD 4nXe779cl Oq8lEZMSayGy67Pog2WLusETZg fu6rHlJ9KITSRFQO0twhMgvt5wtYio2Q1aK5YLOIoQGDFIs8N4q20c7n2P3781NdtxR XHVUblm5F2BSH e81q fMA28CLpFNob0Hg?key=g8 dA HcjYUUssUVSlys De

      • Order-level history: This includes details such as the order timeline and order notes. LitExtension can migrate order notes without issue. However, the order timeline is automatically created by Shopify’s system and cannot be imported through the API. For that reason, timeline data cannot be migrated.

    Notes for Shopify orders

    Timeline of a Shopify order

I migrated from BigCommerce to Shopify with “Clear current data on Target Store” option but some orders weren’t deleted. Why?

When migrating from BigCommerce to Shopify, selecting the “Clear current data on Target Store” option will remove the existing data in your Shopify store. However, orders created through Shopify POS or the online checkout system cannot be deleted. Aside from those orders, all other current data in your target Shopify store will be erased.

Who will set up my development store?

Your development store is created by our dedicated Shopify migration experts. They’ll handle the setup, give you full access, and ensure it’s optimized for testing and migration.

What preparation is needed before starting the migration?

To prepare for BigCommerce to Shopify Migration, you need to prepare the following:
    1. Backup BigCommerce Data in case of data loss.
    2. Prepare the new Shopify site.
    3. Install LitExtension connector for BigCommerce site and Shopify site. You can install the connector following our instructions HERE.

Can I migrate product categories when moving from Bigcommerce to Shopify?

Yes, LitExtension can transfer both product options and product attributes from BigCommerce to Shopify.

Regarding product options, Shopify supports a maximum of 3 options for each product, such as size, color, or material. The number of variants allowed depends on your store configuration. In standard cases, Shopify permits up to 100 variants per product. For stores that have access to Shopify’s latest update, this limit can go up to 2,000 variants per product.

For product attributes, LitExtension will move them from BigCommerce to Shopify as product metafields. This helps keep your additional product details organized and available for use in your new store.

Why does BigCommerce to Shopify migration take so long?

To keep the platform reliable and fair for all users, Shopify applies rate limits to its APIs. Shopify uses multiple rate-limiting mechanisms, which are explained in more detail here.

Since Shopify migration works through an API (Application Programming Interface), the process often takes more time than migrations to some open-source platforms. This is not unique to Shopify. In general, any platform that relies on APIs may require a longer migration time.

In addition, the following factors can make Shopify migration slower:

    • A large number of images can increase the migration time.
    • Since March 14, 2019, Shopify has limited the number of Products and Variants that can be created through API-based apps. After a store reaches its first 50,000 product variants, the API can only create up to 1,000 additional variants every 24 hours. You can read Shopify’s official explanation here. You may also contact Shopify Support to request a higher limit and explain your situation.
    • Shopify also sets restrictions on order migration. If your store is using a trial plan or Partner development store, Shopify only allows the creation of 5 orders per minute. To avoid this limitation during Full Migration, LitExtension recommends upgrading to a paid Shopify plan in advance.

Can I try migrate some data for free before deciding to buy?

Yes. You can use LitExtension’s BigCommerce to Shopify Migration Free Demo to figure out how it works. This process is 100% free and supported by our migration experts.

Can I migrate BigCommerce reviews to Shopify?

Absolutely Yes. You can move your customers reviews from old BigCommerce website to Shopify, include: Created Date, Rate, User Name, Title, and Comment.

Can I get a free Shopify development store before migrating?

Yes. LitExtension, together with our LitOS team, will set up a Shopify development store for you at no cost. You can test, customize, and prepare your migration with zero risk and no monthly fees until you go live.
