How to Migrate from BigCommerce to OpenCart

Use the Automated Migration tool to connect your stores, select the records, and run the transfer. You control the configuration and validate the OpenCart result before launch.

Set Up Source and Target Carts

Step 1. Connect Your Stores

Log in to LitExtension and create a migration. Choose BigCommerce as the Source Cart and OpenCart as the Target Cart, enter both store URLs, and follow the connection instructions shown for each store.

Select Entities (Products, Customers, Orders, etc.) to Migrate

Step 2. Select Your Data

Select products, categories, customers, orders, and the other supported records you need. Review Additional Options, including 301 redirects and order-ID preservation. Back up OpenCart before selecting target-data cleanup.

Perform Full Migration

Step 3. Review the Demo and Run Migration

Run a Free Demo and inspect the sample records in OpenCart. After resolving configuration questions, start Full Migration. The transfer runs on LitExtension’s servers; you review the completed records and finish the store setup before switching your domain.

Choose Your BigCommerce to OpenCart Migration Method

Choose the approach around the records you need to retain and the work your team can manage. A product-only import has a different scope from moving customer accounts, historical orders, reviews, manufacturers, tax records, and coupons.

MethodSuitable scopeYour responsibilities
Manual export and importA defined set of records with an import format your OpenCart setup accepts.Prepare the files, map fields, handle record relationships, and check the imported result. A BigCommerce export is not an OpenCart import specification.
LitExtension Automated MigrationThe supported BigCommerce records and shared OpenCart fields listed below.Connect both stores, select data and options, review the Demo, run Full Migration, and validate the result.
All-in-One Migration ServiceA project your team wants experts to manage, including requirements that need a separate store review.Agree on the scope and review the result. Migration specialists handle the agreed technical transfer and validation.

Automated Migration is the primary workflow on this page. Use expert review for records owned by BigCommerce apps, custom fields, or integrations and for structures outside the listed scope. Document those requirements before choosing a service so the quotation describes the actual work.

Prepare and Back Up Your BigCommerce Store

Start with an inventory of the source data. Record the numbers of products, categories, customers, orders, manufacturers, taxes, coupons, and reviews. Identify information stored by BigCommerce apps, custom fields, external systems, or custom storefront components.

  • Keep source exports and a target backup. Retain current BigCommerce exports and a record of the store settings your team will recreate. Back up the OpenCart files and database before importing data or clearing target records.
  • Review data quality. Identify duplicate SKUs, obsolete records, broken images, and inconsistent descriptions. Agree on any cleanup before editing production data.
  • Prepare OpenCart. Confirm the version, hosting, database, storage, SSL, and extension compatibility with your developer or hosting provider. Test the installation before connecting it.
  • Document access. Arrange the access required by the connection instructions. Give the source only the permissions needed to read the migration data.
  • Inventory apps and integrations. List fulfillment, search, subscriptions, wholesale, accounting, and other workflows. Choose OpenCart replacements and assign configuration work to your team.
  • Record launch dependencies. Keep the current URLs, domain settings, payment providers, shipping methods, and email configuration available for the launch checklist.

Run an Automated BigCommerce to OpenCart Migration

Step 1. Connect BigCommerce and OpenCart

Create a migration in your LitExtension account and enter the Source and Target Cart types and URLs. Follow the connection instructions presented for your selected stores. For an open-source installation, the setup uses the LitExtension connector; arrange help from your developer if file access is managed by another team.

Confirm that both connections succeed before selecting records. Keep the OpenCart target available for testing and avoid switching the production domain at this stage. Check that the migration is pointing to the intended target installation before proceeding.

Step 2. Select Records and Additional Options

Select the entities you want to transfer. Products include the shared category fields. Customers, orders, manufacturers, taxes, coupons, and reviews have their own supported fields, shown in the data section below.

Review each option against your launch plan. Select Preserve Order IDs to retain the source order identifiers. Use 301 redirects to send old URLs to the corresponding OpenCart pages. Description-image migration handles images embedded in product and category descriptions, separately from the ordinary product and category image fields.

Clear Target Data removes existing records for the selected entities before transfer. Check your backup and decide which target records must remain before selecting it. Do not use this option as a substitute for reviewing duplicate data or testing the migration configuration.

Step 3. Run and Inspect a Free Demo

Use the Demo to examine a sample of your selected data in OpenCart. Compare names, descriptions, SKUs, prices, stock values, images, category assignments, customer details, and historical order totals with BigCommerce.

Check representative reviews, manufacturers, coupons, and tax records as well as ordinary product records. Document any discrepancies and resolve the relevant mapping or configuration questions before running the complete transfer. A Demo lets you review the data result; checkout and extension testing remain separate launch tasks.

Step 4. Start Full Migration

Once you approve the Demo result, start Full Migration with the agreed data and options. The transfer runs on LitExtension’s servers, so you can close your browser while it continues. Track progress in your account and inspect the target when the transfer completes.

Keep a record of new BigCommerce orders, customer registrations, and catalog edits made during the move. An initial transfer is not continuous synchronization. Plan the final data update and domain switch together so the launch includes the required recent activity.

How BigCommerce Data Maps to OpenCart

DataConfirmed scopeReview before launch
Products and categoriesShared text, price, stock, image, manufacturer, tax-class, attribute, category, and SEO metadata fields.SKUs, descriptions, prices, images, category assignments, and attribute presentation.
CustomersFirst name, last name, email, and billing address.Customer details and connections to historical orders. Customer passwords are outside the standard scope.
OrdersIDs, dates, statuses, items, totals, comments, customer details, billing address, and shipping address.Historical records, order totals, and customer relationships.
Manufacturers and taxesManufacturer names, descriptions, and images; tax-class names and tax-rate countries and rates.Record values and the target tax configuration used by checkout.
Coupons and reviewsShared coupon codes, descriptions, date fields, limits, discounts, and groups; review dates, status, ratings, author names, and comments.Discount behavior and review presentation in OpenCart.

BigCommerce variants and OpenCart options need a defined representation before they are included in a custom project. Send examples of variant structures, SKU rules, prices, and stock to the migration team. The standard product fields listed below do not promise a transfer of every variant structure.

CMS pages, blog posts, themes, app functionality, payment credentials, and shipping configuration are outside this standard data transfer. Plan content recreation and OpenCart configuration separately. For app-owned data, custom fields, or page-builder content, request a review of the actual source records and intended destination before agreeing on additional work.

Migration Cost and Timeline

Use your product, customer, and order counts to estimate the migration cost. The selected records, images, options, source and target setup, and any separately agreed custom work determine the final scope. Use Estimate Migration Cost for this route.

Preparation, transfer, validation, and launch are separate stages. Allow time for reviewing the Demo, correcting data issues, configuring the OpenCart storefront, and testing checkout. Use the Demo and your store inventory to plan the work instead of relying on a fixed completion-time promise.

Post-Migration Checklist: BigCommerce to OpenCart

Check Migrated Records

  • Compare source and target counts for the selected entities.
  • Inspect product text, SKUs, stock, prices, images, metadata, attributes, and category assignments.
  • Review customer names, emails, billing addresses, and links to historical orders.
  • Compare historical order IDs, dates, statuses, totals, comments, and addresses.
  • Inspect manufacturers, tax records, coupons, and reviews.

Complete the OpenCart Setup

  • Configure the target theme, navigation, extensions, email delivery, and integrations.
  • Set up payment providers and shipping methods; verify tax behavior against your business requirements.
  • Recreate CMS pages and other content outside the standard transfer.
  • Test product pages, search, cart, and checkout on desktop and mobile.

Review URLs and Search Visibility

  • Map important old URLs to relevant OpenCart destinations and test the redirects.
  • Review product and category meta titles and descriptions, internal links, canonical URLs, and indexing settings.
  • Submit the target sitemap and monitor crawl errors and indexing after launch.

Update Recent Data and Launch

Before switching the domain, account for records created or changed in BigCommerce after the initial transfer. Recent Data Migration transfers new records; Smart Update handles supported changes to existing records; Re-migration reruns a transfer. Confirm the records, eligibility, and current service terms for the operation you need.

Approve the migrated data, checkout, redirects, and recent-data result before the domain switch. Monitor new orders, payments, customer access, and error reports after launch. Report migration discrepancies with example source and target records so support can investigate the specific issue.

FAQs About BigCommerce to OpenCart Migration

Not seeing your question listed here? Contact Us for the quickest answer!

What data can I migrate from BigCommerce to OpenCart?

The standard transfer includes the shared product and category fields, customers, orders, manufacturers, taxes, coupons, and reviews listed above. Select the records you need and inspect them in a Free Demo. CMS pages, blogs, themes, app functionality, and custom storefront components are outside this standard transfer.

Can I run a Free Demo before Full Migration?

Yes. Run a Free Demo to inspect a sample of your selected BigCommerce records in OpenCart. Check text, SKUs, prices, stock, images, categories, customer details, historical orders, coupons, and reviews before starting Full Migration. Start your Free Demo.

Can I keep selling on BigCommerce during the migration?

Yes. Your BigCommerce storefront can remain available during the data transfer. Keep track of new records and changes made after the initial transfer, then plan the recent-data operation and domain switch. Test the target checkout before launch; data transfer alone does not complete the store setup.

Will customer passwords migrate to OpenCart?

No. BigCommerce customer passwords are not included in the standard BigCommerce to OpenCart field scope. The shared customer fields are first name, last name, email, and billing address. Plan the customer account-access and password-reset process separately, then test it in OpenCart before launch.

Can I retain BigCommerce order IDs and historical orders?

Yes. Historical order IDs, dates, statuses, items, totals, comments, customer details, and billing and shipping addresses are supported. Select Preserve Order IDs to keep source identifiers unchanged in OpenCart. Compare representative orders and their customer relationships after the Demo and Full Migration.

Can product reviews migrate from BigCommerce to OpenCart?

Yes. Supported review fields include creation date, status, rating, author name, and comment. Inspect representative reviews in the Demo and verify their product relationships, approval status, rating values, author display, and comment formatting before launch.

Do BigCommerce variants transfer as OpenCart options?

No. The standard field list does not confirm BigCommerce variants as OpenCart options. Product attributes are included as a shared field. Send examples of variant structures, SKUs, prices, and stock to Contact Us; experts will review the source structure and intended OpenCart representation and advise on the requirement.

Will my CMS pages, blogs, theme, and apps transfer?

No. CMS pages and blogs are outside this standard route, and the data migration does not transfer the BigCommerce theme or app functionality. Plan content recreation and compatible OpenCart functionality separately. Contact Us with the content, app-data, or custom storefront requirements for expert review.

How do I prepare my SEO when switching to OpenCart?

Migrate the supported product and category meta titles and descriptions, and select 301 redirects for changed URLs. Map old pages to relevant destinations, test redirects and internal links, review indexing settings, and submit the target sitemap. Monitor indexing and traffic after launch; a migration does not guarantee unchanged search rankings.

How much does BigCommerce to OpenCart migration cost, and how long does it take?

Cost depends on the records, selected options, and any separately agreed custom work. Use Estimate Migration Cost for this route. Transfer duration also depends on data volume, images, connection performance, and target setup. Allow time for preparation, Demo review, validation, and launch testing.

How do I handle data created or changed during migration?

Record new BigCommerce activity after the initial transfer. Recent Data Migration transfers new records; Smart Update handles supported edits to existing records; Re-migration reruns the transfer. Confirm the scope and current service terms for the operation you need, validate the result, and complete the final update before switching the domain.

Should I use Automated Migration or All-in-One service?

Choose Automated Migration when your team will connect the stores, select data and options, review the Demo, and validate OpenCart. Choose All-in-One when you want experts to manage the agreed transfer and testing with a Personal Assistant. Schedule a Call to discuss custom requirements and the service scope.

Prefer an Expert-Managed Migration?

Choose All-in-One Migration Service if you want LitExtension experts to manage your BigCommerce to OpenCart transfer. Discuss your data, app or integration requirements, and launch plan before agreeing on the service scope.

I am in the process of moving my existing website over to Shopify. As this is my 4th iteration of my website, I knew I didn’t want to do the migration part myself again! Using this service meant that I could concentrate on running my business for a couple of days while the migration was being done for me.

They helped me set it up and did the contract. Emailed me at every stage and listened to my feedback. I found them on Thursday and by Monday the work was completed.

Took most of the work off our hands. The team were great and went out of their way to get the migration from J2store to Shopify completed. The time zone differences were slightly difficult but that didn’t stop the work from being completed.
