How to Migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify

Before starting the full migration, it helps to understand the main flow and the data points that need extra attention. A PrestaShop to Shopify migration usually involves more than moving basic store data, especially when your store has product combinations, category structures, customer records, order history, custom modules, or SEO URLs.

Setup Carts

Step 1: Set Up Your Source and Target Carts

Select PrestaShop as your Source Cart and Shopify as your Target Cart. Enter your store URL and follow the instructions to connect both stores for migration.

Select Entites

Step 2: Select Your Store Data Entities

Choose the entities you want to migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify, such as products, product categories, customers, orders, coupons, CMS pages, and more.

Full Migration

Step 3: Run a Demo or Full Migration

Start with a Free Demo Migration to preview how your data appears in Shopify. Once you are ready, run the full PrestaShop to Shopify migration. The process runs on LitExtension’s server, so you do not need to keep your browser open.

Before You Migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify

Before migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify, define the data you want to transfer, identify any store-specific requirements, and decide how the migration results will be reviewed. These checks help establish the right migration scope before you run the Free Demo or Full Migration.

What to prepare What to check
Review and back up your PrestaShop store Create a current backup and confirm that you can access both the PrestaShop store and Shopify admin. Note any server restrictions that may affect the source-store connection.
Define your migration scope Decide which products, combinations, categories, customers, orders, coupons, CMS pages, images, and SEO data should be transferred to Shopify.
Identify custom requirements Document customer groups, specific prices, custom fields, B2B rules, multilingual data, multistore configurations, custom modules, and external systems that may require additional mapping or custom work.
Plan migration validation Assign someone to review the Free Demo and Full Migration results. If PrestaShop remains active during the transfer, also plan how newly added orders, customers, and product updates will be moved before launch.

If your PrestaShop store includes custom modules, B2B pricing, multilingual or multistore data, ERP/PIM integrations, or other non-standard structures, contact LitExtension before the Full Migration so the required mapping, scope, and custom work can be reviewed.

How to Migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify with LitExtension

The three-step summary above provides a quick overview of the PrestaShop to Shopify migration process. The walkthrough below shows how to start a new migration from your LitExtension account, connect Shopify through the LitExtension Store Migration Tool, configure your PrestaShop data, and review the result before the Full Migration.

This guide focuses on store data migration. If your project also includes rebuilding your PrestaShop theme, recreating custom functionality, or configuring Shopify apps and integrations, LitExtension can review these requirements separately as part of your migration scope.

Migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify

Step 1: Connect Shopify and PrestaShop

Start by signing in to your LitExtension account and connecting your Shopify target store through the LitExtension Store Migration Tool. Once inside the Shopify app, you can connect PrestaShop as the Source Cart and continue configuring your migration.

1.1. Start a New Migration from Your LitExtension Account

Log in to your LitExtension account and click “+ New Migration.” In the Setup Target Store section, click “Install LitExtension App.” You will be redirected to the Shopify App Store to install the LitExtension Store Migration Tool.

If the app is already installed on your Shopify store, click “Open” instead. Once you are inside the app in Shopify Admin, click “+ Create New Migration” to continue.

1.2. Connect PrestaShop as the Source Cart

In the Source Cart Setup step, select PrestaShop from the drop-down menu and enter the required store information. Follow the connection instructions displayed in the app to connect your PrestaShop store. Once the connection is successful, continue to the migration configuration screen to select your data and migration options.
If your PrestaShop store contains custom modules, modified data structures, multistore configurations, B2B features, or other non-standard data, contact LitExtension before the Full Migration so the required scope can be reviewed.

Step 2: Configure Your PrestaShop to Shopify Migration

After connecting both carts, choose the data you want to transfer and review the migration options that fit your store requirements.

2.1 Select Entities to Migrate

Entities Selection Page

In the Entities To Migrate section, select the PrestaShop data you want to move to Shopify, such as products, product categories, customers, orders, coupons, CMS pages, blog content, images, and SEO URLs.

If you want to migrate all supported data at once, click Select All. For most stores, however, it is worth reviewing each entity carefully so you understand what will be transferred and what may need extra handling.

Pay special attention to:

  • Product combinations, attributes, SKUs, prices, stock, and images
  • Categories and subcategories that may become Shopify collections or product tags
  • Customer records, addresses, customer groups, and password-related data
  • Order history, order statuses, discounts, taxes, and shipping details
  • CMS pages, blog content, SEO metadata, and internal links
  • Custom fields, module-related data, B2B pricing, multilingual data, or multistore setup

If your store includes unsupported entities or custom module data, contact LitExtension experts for a migration review before running the full transfer.

2.2 Review Additional Migration Options

After selecting your data, review the Additional Options section. Common options include clearing selected data on Shopify before migration, preserving order IDs, creating 301 redirects from PrestaShop to Shopify when URLs change, migrating images in descriptions, stripping HTML tags, and migrating PrestaShop categories into Shopify automated collections.

Do not enable options automatically without reviewing your store needs. For example, 301 redirects are useful when important PrestaShop URLs will change in Shopify, while preserving order IDs may be important if your team uses historical order numbers for accounting, customer support, or internal tracking.

If you are not sure which options to enable, contact LitExtension support before starting the full transfer.

Step 3: Run Demo Migration and Review the Result

Before running the full PrestaShop to Shopify migration, start with a Free Demo Migration. The demo lets you preview how selected PrestaShop data appears in Shopify and gives you time to check data mapping before committing to the full transfer.

After the demo, review sample records in Shopify instead of only checking whether the migration completed. Look at products with multiple combinations, products with images, categories, customers with addresses, orders with discounts or shipping details, CMS pages, and URLs.

Check whether:

  • Product combinations are mapped into Shopify variants correctly
  • Categories appear as the right Shopify collections, tags, or navigation structure
  • Images are displayed properly
  • Customer and order relationships are preserved
  • Order statuses, totals, discounts, taxes, and shipping details look correct
  • SEO titles, descriptions, and important URLs are present
  • Any expected data is missing, duplicated, or formatted incorrectly

If something does not look right, adjust your selected entities, migration options, or mapping requirements before running the full migration.

Step 4: Run Full PrestaShop to Shopify Migration

When the demo result looks correct, start the full PrestaShop to Shopify migration. LitExtension runs the transfer on its cloud-based system, so you do not need to keep your browser open during the process.

Keep your PrestaShop store active during migration if you still need to receive orders. After the full transfer is complete, review the migration report and check your Shopify store before launch. If new orders, customers, or product updates were added to PrestaShop during the migration period, you may need Recent Data Migration to transfer the latest data before switching traffic to Shopify.

Full Migration

Validate Your PrestaShop Data After Migration

Once the Full Migration is complete, review the migration report and validate representative records in Shopify before switching traffic from PrestaShop. Focus on data completeness, relationships, platform-specific mapping, and any records added to the source store during the migration period.
PrestaShop to Shopify PostMigration Checklist

1. Review Record Counts and the Migration Report

Compare the number of migrated products, customers, orders, categories, and other selected entities with the corresponding records in PrestaShop. Then review the LitExtension migration report for skipped, failed, or partially migrated items.

A difference in record counts does not always indicate a migration error because PrestaShop and Shopify may organize certain data differently. However, any unexplained difference should be reviewed before launch.

2. Check Products, Combinations, Images, and Collections

Review a representative sample of simple and configurable products. Confirm that product names, descriptions, SKUs, prices, inventory, images, and SEO fields appear correctly in Shopify.

Pay particular attention to whether:

  • PrestaShop combinations are mapped to the correct Shopify variants.
  • Variant options, prices, SKUs, stock, and images remain associated with the correct product.
  • Categories and subcategories are organized into the intended Shopify collections, tags, or navigation structure.
  • Product and category images display correctly without broken URLs.

3. Validate Customers, Orders, and Their Relationships

Check customer profiles, email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, and any supported customer-group data. Customer passwords may require a separate activation or reset process depending on the migration setup.

Review recent and historical orders to confirm that they remain linked to the correct customers and products. Check order numbers, dates, statuses, totals, discounts, taxes, shipping information, addresses, and payment-related records against the original PrestaShop data.

4. Test URLs, Metadata, and Redirects

Review the migrated SEO titles, meta descriptions, handles, internal links, and URLs for important products, collections, CMS pages, and blog content. Because Shopify uses a fixed URL structure, some PrestaShop URLs may change after migration.

If 301 redirects were included in your migration, test a representative set of high-value PrestaShop URLs and confirm that each one leads to the most relevant Shopify page. Also check for broken internal links or images that still reference the old store structure.

If new orders, customers, or product updates were added to PrestaShop after the Full Migration started, use Recent Data Migration when applicable and repeat the relevant checks above. For payment, shipping, tax, apps, analytics, communication tools, and other Shopify launch tasks, follow our Shopify post-migration checklist before making the new store live.

FAQs About PrestaShop to Shopify Migration

Not seeing your question listed here? Contact Us for the quickest answer!

How long does it take to migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify?

The data transfer time depends mainly on the number of products, customers, orders, images, and other selected entities. Large catalogs, product combinations, custom fields, and module-related data may also require additional configuration and validation.

Keep in mind that the migration itself may take less time than the complete replatforming project, which can also include theme development, app setup, testing, and store launch. Use the Pricing Estimator for an initial migration estimate or contact LitExtension if your store has complex requirements.

How much does it cost to migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify?

The migration cost depends on the number of products, customers, orders, blog posts, and other entities you transfer, as well as the selected Additional Options and service plan.

Standard migrations can be estimated with the Pricing Estimator. Stores with custom modules, B2B pricing, multistore or multilingual data, custom fields, ERP/PIM integrations, or non-standard mapping requirements should be reviewed separately for a project-specific quote.

Will migrating from PrestaShop to Shopify affect SEO?

A platform migration can affect SEO because Shopify and PrestaShop use different URL structures. Changes to URLs, metadata, internal links, content, or redirects may temporarily affect crawling, indexing, and rankings.

To reduce the risk, map important PrestaShop URLs to their most relevant Shopify pages with 301 redirects, retain essential metadata and content where possible, update internal links, and monitor redirected URLs and 404 errors after launch. No migration provider can guarantee that rankings will remain completely unchanged.

Will customer passwords be migrated from PrestaShop to Shopify?

Customer profiles, email addresses, and supported address data can be migrated, but existing passwords generally cannot be transferred directly because PrestaShop and Shopify use different password-storage and encryption systems.

Customers may need to activate their Shopify accounts or create new passwords after migration. Plan the account activation process and related customer communication before launching the Shopify store.

Can I continue selling on PrestaShop during the migration?

Yes. Your PrestaShop store remains active during the data migration, so customers can continue placing orders while LitExtension transfers the selected data to Shopify.

Any orders, customers, or product updates created after the Full Migration begins will not automatically be part of the original transfer. Before switching traffic to Shopify, use Recent Data Migration or another applicable post-migration service to move the latest records and validate them again.

What happens to PrestaShop modules and custom data after migration?

PrestaShop modules themselves cannot be installed or transferred directly to Shopify because the two platforms use different architectures. Standard data created by a module may be migrated when it matches a supported Shopify field, while custom fields, B2B rules, specific prices, multilingual or multistore data, and module-generated records may require additional mapping or custom migration.

Document these requirements before the Full Migration so LitExtension can determine what can be transferred, how it should be represented in Shopify, and whether a compatible Shopify app or separate development work is needed.

The import was not exceptional from the beginning, having quite a few customized things in PrestaShop. However, all the people I contacted at LitExtension took a keen interest in making things work out well. They even intervened and adapted the module so that all the data would transfer to Shopify. I would definitely turn to them again if I had to go through this process once more. Thank you.

We had a great experience with LitExtension during our migration. We migrated over 30000 products with their specifications data, 60000 customers and 60000 orders. The LitExtension team helped us through the whole thing, with very quick responses and good solutions when we would get stuck and needed to find ways to adapt old data to the new platform. Our migration was from PrestaShop to Shopify. If we were to do it again, we would choose LitExtension again as well.

It’s not the first time I use litextension migration services for Shopify. Earlier I did a Prestashop migration to Shopify and now I did from Wix to Shopify.
Both migrations went 100% according to expectation and without any data lost.
Thank you so much specialy to Andy Dang for his on going support.
Will use this service for sure again when required.

LitExtension made my migration from PrestaShop to Shopify possible and Jay from the team made my experience phenomenal. He was very capable, attentive, professional, and willing to go the extra distance to make sure our issues were resolved. On our launch day he was even available after hours to make sure it went smoothly and as scheduled. I highly recommend Jay and his team from LitExtension when it comes to any sort of data migration. They know what they are doing and know how to take care of the customer.
