This case study covers a BigCommerce to Shopify migration for a long-established herbal health brand. The project included 27,000+ customers, 21,000+ historical orders, and 90,000+ coupons. To protect years of business data, our team customized the mapping of customer groups, historical order statuses, and product-to-blog relationships to fit Shopify’s structure, delivering an accurate, large-scale migration and from BigCommerce to Shopify.

About Our Client

Our client is a U.S. natural health company that has supplied liquid herbal formulas to customers nationwide since 1991. Their products are alcohol-free and sugar-free, and they’re designed for pregnancy, children, and the whole family, covering needs from immune support and sleep to digestion and seasonal wellness. They also publish educational herbal content through their blog.

Over three decades, the business built a loyal customer base and a large store history, including tens of thousands of orders and promotional coupons. To support their next stage of growth, the client decided to replatform to Shopify. However, they wanted every historical record, customer segment, and piece of content to arrive in the new store exactly as it worked before.

Because the project combined custom data requirements with website development, the client needed a partner that could handle both. Therefore, they chose LitExtension for our experience with BigCommerce to Shopify migration and our ability to deliver migration and store development together through LitOS.

Our Client’s Requirements

The client outlined the following requirements for their BigCommerce to Shopify migration:

  • Migrate all store data, including products, customers, orders, coupons, blog posts, and pages, from BigCommerce to Shopify.
  • Preserve customer segmentation by carrying BigCommerce customer groups, such as wholesale customers, over to Shopify.
  • Keep historical orders accurate, including orders with Partially Shipped, Canceled, and Refunded statuses.
  • Retain the relationships between products and their related blog posts.
Support Shopify website development alongside the data migration.

The Challenges

The main challenge was that customer and order data are structured differently on each platform. BigCommerce sorts customers into groups and gives each order a single status, such as Partially Shipped, Canceled, or Refunded. Shopify, however, segments customers with tags and splits order information across separate order, payment, and fulfillment statuses. As a result, both Customer Group Mapping and Order Status Migration required custom mapping.

In addition, product-to-blog relationships have no standard field in Shopify. This kind of specialized information is stored in metafields, which save details not usually captured in the Shopify admin, such as related products. Beyond these mapping needs, the project involved a high volume of historical data and the build-out of the new Shopify storefront.

Our Solution

This project combined our migration expertise with store development from LitOS, allowing us to handle both the data and the new storefront in one coordinated process.

To begin, we handled customer segmentation. Our team mapped each BigCommerce customer group to a matching Shopify customer tag. For example, wholesale customers received the “wholesale” tag, so the client could continue identifying and managing these segments in Shopify.

Next, we customized the order status mapping. Our team aligned each BigCommerce status with Shopify’s order status structure, so historical orders, including Partially Shipped, Cancelled, and Refunded orders, were represented accurately in Shopify.

Then, we preserved the links between products and content. We transferred each product’s related blog post information into Shopify metafields, keeping the relationships between products and their supporting articles.

After that, we ran the large-scale historical data migration using structured data mapping while maintaining data accuracy and consistency. Throughout the project, our team worked alongside LitOS so the new storefront aligned with the migrated data.
