Manually export and import data from Wix to Shopify

If you have a smaller store or prefer a hands-on approach, you can migrate your data from Wix to Shopify manually without using any third-party tools. This method gives you full control over each step, but it comes with some important limitations to consider before you begin.

The manual process requires you to export data from Wix, reformat CSV files to match Shopify’s required structure, and upload each data type separately. It takes time and a reasonable comfort level with spreadsheet formatting and CSV files. If your files are not structured correctly, data may not import properly, resulting in missing products, broken images, or inaccurate customer and order records.

For these reasons, the manual approach works best for store owners with smaller catalogs who are comfortable working with data files and can dedicate time to reviewing each step carefully.

Step 1. Export Wix data

Wix does not offer a single export tool that covers all store data. You will need to download each data type separately depending on what you plan to migrate.

Step 1.1. Export Wix product data

• From your Wix Admin dashboard, go to the “Product” tab.
• Select the products you want to export by ticking the corresponding boxes.
• Click “More Actions” then “Export” and wait for the download to complete.

Note that Wix only supports CSV export for physical products. For digital products, you will need to save your files locally and re-upload them to Shopify manually.

Step 1.2. Export Wix customer data

Wix stores customer data under “Contacts,” not “Customers,” so keep this in mind to avoid confusion.

• Go to your “Contact List” in the Wix Admin dashboard.
• Select the contacts you want to migrate to Shopify.
• Click “More Actions” then “Export contacts” from the dropdown.
• In the pop-up, choose which contacts to export and select your preferred file format.
• Click “Export” and wait for the file to download.

Step 1.3. Export Wix orders

Step 2. Configure data to match Shopify’s format

Before importing, you need to reformat your exported Wix CSV files to match Shopify’s required data structure. Shopify expects a specific column format for products, customers, and other data types, and files that do not conform will fail to import correctly.

Open each exported file and review it for missing fields, inconsistent values, or columns that Shopify does not recognize. Reorganize the data by mapping your Wix fields to the equivalent Shopify columns. If your store has product variants or custom data, pay close attention to how these are structured, as they often require extra attention to import correctly.

Shopify also requires CSV files to be saved in UTF-8 encoding. Taking the time to properly format your files now will reduce errors and make the import step significantly smoother.

Common mistakes to avoid when migrating from Wix to Shopify

• Cancelling your Wix plan too early. Once your Wix subscription ends, you lose access to product descriptions, blog content, and page metadata you may still need for redirects or cleanup. Keep your Wix plan active for at least 30 days after your Shopify store goes live.
• Skipping 301 redirects. Wix and Shopify use different URL structures, so every page address changes after migration. Without redirects, your old pages return errors and your search rankings can drop. Build your redirect map before switching your domain, not after.
