Perform Full Migration
#3: Perform Full Migration to Shopify

Let’s start with our setup guide to switch from Wix to Shopify. Once the process is kicked off, it will constantly run even when you turn off your browser.

If you are planning to switch from Wix to Shopify, following the right steps is essential. We will walk you through how our team handles the full Wix to Shopify migration process, and also explain how to export and import data manually if you prefer to do it yourself.

How to migrate from Wix to Shopify with LitExtension

Here is a summary of the 7 steps we follow:

  1. Technical consultation with our migration experts
  2. Pre-migration customization
  3. Demo migration
  4. Full migration
  5. Migration results testing
  6. Post-migration tasks
  7. Post-migration customer support

The sections below break down each step so you know exactly what to expect throughout the process.

Step 1. Technical consultation with our migration experts

Every migration begins with a one-on-one technical consultation, where our team reviews your Wix store in detail and defines the most effective migration strategy for your setup.

The workload is structured as follows:

  • Conduct a detailed technical consultation to understand your store’s current setup
  • Analyze your store size, structure, and overall complexity
  • Identify potential risks and challenges early in the process
  • Define the full scope of data to be migrated, including: Products, Customers. Orders, Other relevant data
  • Map data relationships to ensure accuracy and consistency after migration
  • Estimate required time and resources based on scope and complexity
  • Evaluate custom elements such as: Custom fields, Unique layouts, Specific workflows
  • Incorporate all custom requirements into the migration plan to prevent data loss or misalignment

Step 2. Pre-migration customization

Once the consultation is complete, we prepare both your Wix store (source) and your new Shopify store (target) for migration. This includes collecting the necessary store credentials, verifying your Shopify setup is correctly configured, and completing the data mapping process.

Data mapping is where we align your Wix data structure to Shopify’s format. If your store includes custom fields or non-standard data types, we map those to their Shopify equivalents to maintain consistency. By the end of this step, everything is configured and ready for a clean, reliable transfer.

Step 3. Demo migration

Before transferring your full data set, we run a demo migration using a small sample of your products, customers, and orders. This lets us confirm how your data will appear in Shopify, verify that the structure is correct, and catch any issues before they affect the full migration.

If your total number of entities is under 2,000, the demo is skipped by default unless you request it. Otherwise, we run the demo through our automated system, review the results, and make any necessary adjustments before proceeding.

Step 4. Full migration

With the demo approved, we move forward with transferring all selected data to your Shopify store. The migration follows the custom settings finalized in earlier steps, and we take care to preserve content relationships such as product-to-collection links so your store structure stays intact.

Importantly, your Wix store remains fully live throughout the process. Our migration runs automatically on the cloud, so there is no need to put your store into maintenance mode or pause operations. Once the migration is complete, we notify you immediately so you can begin reviewing your new Shopify store.

Step 5. Migration results testing

After the full migration, we conduct multiple rounds of verification to confirm that all data has transferred accurately. We review products, customers, orders, and other key entities to ensure everything matches the expected output.

Once testing is complete and all results are validated, we provide a project outcome confirmation so you have a clear record that your new Shopify store is ready to go live.

Step 6. Post-migration tasks

Because your Wix store stays active during migration, new data may continue to come in after the process begins. To keep your store fully up to date, we offer the following post-migration services for a defined period after completion:

  • Unlimited recent data migration for any new data that accounts for less than 5% of the initial migration, available for 30 days after completion.
  • Free and unlimited re-migration within 30 days after the migration is completed.
  • Free and unlimited smart update within 90 days after the migration is completed.

Step 7. Post-migration customer support

Our involvement does not end when the migration finishes. Within 30 days after completion, our support team is available to answer questions, resolve any issues, and help you feel confident managing your new Shopify store. Whether it is a technical concern or a question about your setup, we are here to help so you can focus on running your business.

Manually export and import data from Wix to Shopify

If you have a smaller store or prefer a hands-on approach, you can migrate your data from Wix to Shopify manually without using any third-party tools. This method gives you full control over each step, but it comes with some important limitations to consider before you begin.

The manual process requires you to export data from Wix, reformat CSV files to match Shopify’s required structure, and upload each data type separately. It takes time and a reasonable comfort level with spreadsheet formatting and CSV files. If your files are not structured correctly, data may not import properly, resulting in missing products, broken images, or inaccurate customer and order records.

For these reasons, the manual approach works best for store owners with smaller catalogs who are comfortable working with data files and can dedicate time to reviewing each step carefully.

Step 1. Export Wix data

Wix does not offer a single export tool that covers all store data. You will need to download each data type separately depending on what you plan to migrate.

Step 1.1. Export Wix product data

  • From your Wix Admin dashboard, go to the “Product” tab.
  • Select the products you want to export by ticking the corresponding boxes.
  • Click “More Actions” then “Export” and wait for the download to complete.

Note that Wix only supports CSV export for physical products. For digital products, you will need to save your files locally and re-upload them to Shopify manually.

Step 1.2. Export Wix customer data

Wix stores customer data under “Contacts,” not “Customers,” so keep this in mind to avoid confusion.

Export Wix customer data

  • Go to your “Contact List” in the Wix Admin dashboard.
  • Select the contacts you want to migrate to Shopify.
  • Click “More Actions” then “Export contacts” from the dropdown.
  • In the pop-up, choose which contacts to export and select your preferred file format.
  • Click “Export” and wait for the file to download.

Step 1.3. Export Wix orders

Export Wix orders

  • Navigate to the “Orders” tab in your Wix Admin dashboard.
  • Select the orders you want to export and click “Export”.
  • Deselect any columns you do not need in the CSV file.
  • Click “Export” again and save the file to your computer.

Step 2. Configure data to match Shopify’s format

Before importing, you need to reformat your exported Wix CSV files to match Shopify’s required data structure. Shopify expects a specific column format for products, customers, and other data types, and files that do not conform will fail to import correctly.

Open each exported file and review it for missing fields, inconsistent values, or columns that Shopify does not recognize. Reorganize the data by mapping your Wix fields to the equivalent Shopify columns. If your store has product variants or custom data, pay close attention to how these are structured, as they often require extra attention to import correctly.

Shopify also requires CSV files to be saved in UTF-8 encoding. Taking the time to properly format your files now will reduce errors and make the import step significantly smoother.

Step 3. Import data to Shopify

  • Log in to your Shopify Admin dashboard and go to the “Products” page.
  • Click “Import” and add your formatted CSV file.
  • Tick the “Publish new products to all sales channels” option.
  • Click “Upload and continue”.
  • Preview the first product to confirm the data looks correct, then click “Import products”.
  • Repeat the same process on the “Customers” page to import your customer data.
Import data to Shopify

Note that Shopify does not have a built-in tool to import orders via CSV. To migrate your order history, you will need to use a third-party app from the Shopify App Store, such as EZ Importer or a similar order import tool.

Common mistakes to avoid when migrating from Wix to Shopify

Most migration problems come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here is what to watch for:

  • Cancelling your Wix plan too early. Once your Wix subscription ends, you lose access to product descriptions, blog content, and page metadata you may still need for redirects or cleanup. Keep your Wix plan active for at least 30 days after your Shopify store goes live.
  • Skipping 301 redirects. Wix and Shopify use different URL structures, so every page address changes after migration. Without redirects, your old pages return errors and your search rankings can drop. Build your redirect map before switching your domain, not after.
  • Forgetting digital products and blog content. Wix does not offer a CSV export for digital products or blog posts. These need to be re-uploaded or copied over manually, so plan extra time for this if your store relies on them.
  • Not checking product options after import. Shopify supports up to 3 product options natively, while Wix allows more. If your products use more than 3 option types, review them after import, since extra options will not carry over without additional setup.
  • Skipping a test order. Before announcing your new store, place a real test order to confirm checkout, taxes, shipping, and payment methods all work as expected.

FAQs About Wix to Shopify Migration

Does migrating to Shopify require any coding knowledge?

No. The CSV import method and our migration service are designed for non-technical users. However, for complex or custom data types, our migration experts can handle the necessary customizations on your behalf.

Will I lose any data when migrating from Wix to Shopify?

Not if you follow the proper steps. We recommend backing up your Wix site before starting. Our migration service ensures all products, customers, and orders are transferred accurately with no data left behind.

Will migrating from Wix to Shopify affect my SEO rankings?

It can, if URLs are not redirected properly. Wix and Shopify use different URL structures, so every product, collection, and page address changes after migration. We set up 301 redirects from your old Wix URLs to their new Shopify equivalents to help preserve your existing rankings and backlinks.

How long does it take to migrate from Wix to Shopify?

The timeline depends on your store size and migration method. Using our migration service can complete the transfer in a few hours for most stores, while manual CSV imports may take longer depending on how much data you have.

Can I migrate digital products from Wix to Shopify?

Currently, Wix does not support exporting digital products via CSV. You will need to re-upload digital products manually to your new Shopify store.

Can Shopify import all my Wix product options?

Shopify supports up to 3 product options natively, such as size, color, and material, while Wix allows more. If your products use additional option types, they will need to be set up separately in Shopify using metafields or a third-party app.

What data can I transfer from Wix to Shopify?

You can migrate products (physical), customers (via the Contacts export), and orders. Each entity is exported as a separate CSV file from your Wix dashboard.

How much does it cost to migrate from Wix to Shopify?

Costs vary by method. Manual CSV migration is free but time-consuming. Our migration service pricing depends on store size and data complexity. Contact us for a free consultation.

Can I customize my Shopify store after migrating from Wix?

Yes. Once migration is complete, you can choose a theme from the Shopify Theme Store, install apps from the Shopify App Store, and configure payment and shipping settings to match your business requirements.

What should I check after completing the Wix to Shopify migration?

Verify that all product details (descriptions, images, variants, meta descriptions) are accurate in both the Shopify backend and storefront. Also run a test order to confirm checkout and payment are functioning correctly.

Do I need to update my domain when migrating from Wix to Shopify?

Yes, if you want to keep the same domain. You will need to update your DNS records to point to Shopify, which can take a few hours up to 48 hours to fully propagate. We recommend keeping your Wix store active during this window so there is no gap in service.

What Shopify plan should I choose after migrating from Wix?

This depends on your business needs. Shopify currently offers a 3-day free trial plus $1 for the first month. If you plan to use Shopify long-term, an annual plan saves 25% compared to monthly billing.

Can I migrate my Wix blog posts and pages to Shopify?

Wix does not offer a direct export tool for blog posts or standalone pages. These need to be copied over manually, or our team can help transfer this content as part of your migration package.

Will my store be offline during the migration?

No. The migration process does not require you to take your Wix store offline. You can continue operating your existing store while setting up your new Shopify store in parallel.

Incredible customer support! What a daunting task it is to move your website. I am migrating my Wix site to Shopify and was worried about migrating my many blog posts. LitExtension made it SO much easier! I’m surprised at how fast everything was completed, including link redirects. I had a question about the links inside each blog post and Mak went through and made sure everything was perfect. Thank you so much for all of your help, really incredible. 🙂

I migrated from Wix to Shopify and at first I tried to do it myself. Huge mistake. The data files that Wix supplies were impossible for me to convert into a shopify friendly format. Luckily LitExtension was able to transfer thousands of orders, customers, and products from my old store to the new one in less than a day. Fast forward a month later and I still had not fully transferred by store( setting up the design and automation etc) and they were able to transfer an additional 1000 orders right away. The customer service is unmatched!
