About Our Client

Our client is a US-based online retailer in the automotive parts space, running an established eCommerce business for several years. As the store grew, product volume and order frequency increased, making daily operations and scalability a key priority.

The store was originally built on ZenCart, but as the catalog expanded and daily orders increased, routine operations gradually became harder to manage. Many tasks required manual work or developer involvement, which slowed down internal workflows and made it difficult for the team to keep up with day-to-day operations.

WooCommerce, on the other hand, offered a more flexible ecosystem with easier customization and a more modern admin experience. This would allow the team to manage products, orders, and store updates more efficiently without relying heavily on technical intervention

When planning the migration, our client needed a provider who could handle the task without putting daily sales at risk. After evaluating several options, they chose LitExtension because of our experience with this specific migration pair. In addition, our structured process gave them confidence in data accuracy and business continuity throughout the transition.

Our Client’s Requirements

Before moving to WooCommerce, our client outlined a clear set of migration requirements as follows:

  • Migrating all essential data from ZenCart to WooCommerce, including products, customers, orders, categories, and related store data (variants, images, pricing, custom pages).
  • Preserving existing SEO URLs for categories and products to avoid traffic loss after the migration.

The Challenges

One of the key challenges involved migrating several custom-built pages from ZenCart. These pages were developed with ZenCart’s specific architecture, meaning their structure could not be transferred directly to WooCommerce. To maintain the same user experience, their layouts, content sections, internal navigation, and interactive elements had to be carefully recreated.

Another minor consideration was category navigation. In WooCommerce, elements such as dropdown menus and sub-category displays are largely controlled by the active theme. Because of this, the category hierarchy needed to be carefully aligned to maintain a consistent browsing experience.

Our Solution

Since the custom pages were built on ZenCart’s architecture, they could not be transferred directly to WooCommerce. As a data migration provider, our role focused on preserving the page content rather than recreating their functionality. We migrated the raw content into draft pages on WooCommerce, allowing the client to reuse the content and rebuild the layouts within the new platform.

During the review, we also identified a potential difference in how category navigation would appear on WooCommerce. We pointed out this trade-off early and suggested the client aligning the category hierarchy and theme configuration before launch to maintain a consistent browsing experience.

Then, all core data, including products, customers, and orders, was migrated using our standard All-in-One Migration Service process. The process covered data mapping, full migration, and thorough QA checks to maintain accuracy and data integrity.
