Shopsite to Shopify Migration
A long-running US-based eCommerce business with over 20,000 entities needed to migrate from ShopSite to Shopify to escape the limits of a legacy closed platform. The project centered on transferring product custom fields and SKUs accurately, so that historical order records and detailed product information stayed intact on the new store. Here’s how it unfolded!

About Our Client
Our client is a US-based online retailer specializing in absorbent and spill control products for commercial and industrial customers. With more than a decade in business and over 11,900 customers on record, online sales play a central role in their operations and continue to grow year over year.
While running their website on ShopSite, the client began to feel constrained by the platform’s closed ecosystem. Adding new features to support evolving business needs was difficult, and even adjusting built-in functionality often required custom development work or external workarounds. Shopify, with its open ecosystem and extensive native eCommerce features, offered the long-term flexibility they were looking for.
As credibility was a key factor in their decision, our client carefully reviewed different migration providers. LitExtension’s positive customer feedback, Built for Shopify badge, and official Shopify partner status helped establish trust and ultimately led them to move forward with our team.
Our Client’s Requirements
Ahead of the migration, our client defined a set of requirements to ensure the new Shopify store could fully reflect their Shopsite database:
- Full transfer of all products, including their custom fields, to retain detailed product information.
- Complete migration of other essential store data such as customers, orders, categories, and related records.
The Challenges
The main challenge in this project came from the structural differences between ShopSite and Shopify. ShopSite stored product information through legacy custom fields that did not map directly to Shopify’s metafield system. If left unresolved, this mismatch could leave detailed product data missing or misaligned on the new store, which in turn would disrupt inventory sync, order fulfillment, and reporting accuracy after launch.
SKU consistency was a related concern. With 2,300+ products and 7,700+ historical orders tied to specific SKU values, any mismatch between source and target SKUs risked breaking the link to past orders and complicating inventory management going forward.
Our Solution
To address the custom fields, we started by reviewing the original ShopSite product data structure in detail and identifying which fields carried business-critical information that needed to be preserved on Shopify. We then prepared a mapping file documenting how each ShopSite custom field would translate into a corresponding Shopify metafield, and shared it with our client for review. Once they confirmed the mapping reflected their requirements, we ran the migration and verified that each field arrived correctly on the target store.
For SKUs, we performed a side-by-side comparison between the ShopSite source data and the migrated Shopify records, checking that every SKU value matched its original. We then handed the comparison results to our client for sign-off, making sure SKU values stayed fully consistent with their existing inventory and historical order references.
The remaining store data – products, customers, orders, and categories – was migrated through our standard All-in-One Migration Service workflow. This included data mapping, full migration, and QA checks to maintain accuracy and integrity across the new Shopify store.
