Nutrition & Wellness Migration with Custom B2B Mapping

A nutrition and wellness brand selling to both retail shoppers and wholesale buyers came to LitExtension for a WooCommerce to Shopify migration. Since its wholesale accounts could not simply be copied over as individual customers, the project quickly became a custom Shopify B2B Migration. Our team rebuilt each Wholesale customer as a Shopify Company and then linked their past orders to the right Company. Finally, a Recent Data Migration brought over the newest orders ahead of launch.

About Our Client

Our client is a nutrition and wellness brand offering dietary supplements to everyday consumers as well as wholesale buyers, including healthcare professionals. As a result, their online store serves two very different types of customers under one roof.

Over time, managing wholesale accounts through WooCommerce user roles and add-ons became harder to scale. The client therefore decided to move to Shopify and use its built-in B2B features, which manage business customers as Companies with their own contacts and locations. Still, their wholesale relationships and purchase history had to fit into this new structure without losing any detail.

A standard migration would only carry customers over as individual profiles, which was not enough for this setup. The client needed custom data mapping and turned to LitExtension for our hands-on experience tailoring migration logic to B2B stores.

Our Client’s Requirements

To make their B2B setup work on Shopify, the client asked us to:

  • Classify Retail and Wholesale customers according to their WooCommerce roles.
  • Migrate Wholesale customers into Shopify’s Company structure, with the appropriate contacts and permissions.
  • Associate Wholesale customers’ historical orders with their corresponding Shopify Companies.
  • Transfer newly placed orders before the Shopify store went live.

The Challenges

Translating Wholesale roles into Shopify Companies was the first hurdle. On WooCommerce, the client had simply separated customer types with user roles.

Shopify, however, organizes B2B customers differently: each Company has its own locations, and customers are attached to it as contacts with specific permissions. To complicate matters, some Wholesale customers were healthcare professionals whose business names matched their personal names, so names alone could not tell Wholesale accounts apart from Retail ones.

Orders raised a related issue. Even with the Company records in place, historical orders placed by Wholesale customers still had to be associated with the correct Shopify Company instead of an individual customer profile. Otherwise, the client would lose the full purchase history of each business account.

Our Solution

Our first step was to customize the migration logic so customers were classified by their WooCommerce roles rather than their names. This way, every Wholesale account was identified accurately, including those whose business and personal names were the same.

From there, we built the Shopify Company structure. Our team first set up the Company and contact relationships on a sample, assigning the customer as Main Contact with Location Admin permissions at the Company’s location. Once the client approved the sample, we applied the confirmed structure across the migration and re-migrated customers to reflect the correct classification.

Orders came next. To handle them, we adjusted the order migration logic so Wholesale orders were linked to their corresponding Shopify Companies. Our team tested representative cases first, and only after the client approved the results did we re-migrate the affected orders using the approved mapping.

As launch day approached, we coordinated a Recent Data Migration, transferring the newest orders to Shopify. The client confirmed the update was complete, so both their retail and B2B order history were in place for the new store.

What Customer Thinks About Us

“Our wholesale customers were the part we worried about most, because many of them trade under their own names. LitExtension sorted them by role and tested the Company setup with us before applying it to everyone. Thanks to that care, our wholesale accounts and their order history were ready on Shopify right on time for launch.”
