Complete Shopify-to-Shopify Migration Guide

A Shopify-to-Shopify migration involves transferring supported store data, validating the results, and preparing the new store for launch. Use the following steps to manage each part of the process.

1. Prepare and Connect Your Shopify Stores

Confirm which Shopify store will be the source and which will become the target. The target store should be active and accessible, but it does not need to be publicly available during preparation and testing.

Review the source store and define what needs to be migrated. Separately record anything that must be recreated or configured on the target store, including the theme, installed apps, payment methods, shipping rules, taxes, domains, custom code, and third-party integrations.

Remove outdated products, duplicate customer records, unused discounts, and unnecessary test data. If the target store already contains data, decide what should be retained or cleared before migration to prevent duplicates.

Sign in at app.litextension.com and create a new migration. Select Shopify as both the Source Cart and Target Cart. Connect the source store, then install or open the LitExtension Store Migration Tool to authorize the target store.

2. Configure and Run the Migration

Select the supported products, collections, customers, orders, discounts, pages, blog posts, and related fields you want to transfer. Then configure any required Additional Migration Options.

Run the Free Demo to transfer a limited sample. Check whether representative records retain the expected content, relationships, images, prices, inventory, metadata, and order information. If anything is missing or mapped incorrectly, review the settings before continuing.

Custom metafields, app-generated records, unusual data structures, and third-party integrations may require additional assessment rather than standard automated mapping.

Once the Demo result has been verified, launch the Full Migration. The transfer continues in the background even if you close your browser, while the source Shopify store remains available to customers.

3. Validate and Launch the Target Store

After migration, compare the entity totals shown in the result with the source store and inspect representative records in Shopify. Resolve any missing data or formatting issues before preparing the store for launch.

Next, complete the parts that are not included in the data transfer:

  • Review the theme, navigation, mobile display, and custom code;
  • Install and configure the required Shopify apps;
  • Reconnect payment, shipping, tax, analytics, email, ERP, CRM, and fulfillment services;
  • Test search, filters, cart, checkout, notifications, and order processing;
  • Check URL handles, SEO metadata, redirects, and the custom domain.

Customer passwords are not copied between Shopify stores, so prepare the appropriate account-access process for the new store.

If new data was created on the source store while the migration was running, transfer those recent changes before launch. Place a final test order, confirm that essential workflows are working, and then connect or transfer the primary domain.

Keep the source store available until the target store has been fully validated. After launch, monitor redirects, 404 errors, organic traffic, inventory, orders, and third-party integrations.

Shopify-to-Shopify Migration FAQs

Not seeing your question listed here? Contact Us for the quickest answer.
Can I create an exact copy of my Shopify store?

A Shopify-to-Shopify migration can transfer supported store data, but it does not create an exact copy of every part of your source store. Theme settings, apps, payment methods, shipping rules, taxes, domains, custom code, and third-party integrations may require separate setup on the target store.

Can Shopify themes and apps be transferred to the new store?

Theme files can be handled separately, but customizations and theme licensing must be reviewed for the target store. Shopify apps normally need to be installed and configured again. App-generated data can only be transferred when a compatible export method or an agreed custom migration solution is available.

Will customer passwords be migrated between Shopify stores?

No. Customer passwords cannot be copied between Shopify stores. Supported customer profiles, addresses, and order relationships can still be migrated, but customers may need to activate access to the new store or use its selected customer account method.

Can historical orders keep their original dates and numbers?

LitExtension can migrate supported historical order information, including customers, items, totals, discounts, taxes, and fulfillment details. Some Shopify-managed fields may be recreated or displayed differently on the target store. Run a Free Demo to check how order dates and numbers appear before starting the Full Migration.

Can my source Shopify store keep receiving orders during migration?

Yes. Your source Shopify store remains available while LitExtension transfers the data, so customers can continue placing orders. Before launch, transfer any supported customers, orders, products, or updates created after the initial migration, then perform a final check of the target store.

Can I keep my domain and URLs after moving to another Shopify store?

You can connect or transfer your custom domain separately after validating the target store. If the new store uses different product, collection, page, or blog handles, create 301 redirects from the affected old URLs to their corresponding destinations. Redirects are not required for URLs that remain unchanged.

How long does a Shopify-to-Shopify migration take?

The migration time depends on the number of entities, the complexity of your data, Shopify API processing, and any custom requirements. A standard automated transfer is generally quicker to prepare than a project involving app data or custom mapping. The target store should still be validated before launch, regardless of the transfer time.

I recently used LiteExtension for the migration of my Shopify store, and I couldn’t be happier with the service! They successfully duplicated my French store to a new Polish store. The migration process was seamless, and they paid close attention to all the options I requested. A small bug was encountered, but it was quickly fixed. The team is highly responsive and extremely competent. I highly recommend LiteExtension for any Shopify migration needs!

Was a very smooth transition. All the problems that arose had nothing to do with Litextension or their process. If godaddy hadn’t given me bad advice then the whole thing would have been done perfectly in less than 24 hours. Definitely recommend, especially if you want to move away from shopify.

The process of our migration to Shopify was very smooth. The support we received from Jett at LitExtension was nothing short of amazing. Even when our project got extended past our deadline, he went above and beyond to accommodate us and not leave us in the lurch. Much appreciated.
