How to get API key from Shopify

Starting January 1, 2026, Shopify no longer allows merchants to create legacy custom apps. Because of this change, the way you connect Shopify with LitExtension now depends on the direction of your migration.

Case 1: Migrating to Shopify

If you’re migrating to Shopify from another platform, you no longer need to manually enter a Shopify API key.

Instead, when using LitExtension’s automated migration tool, you’ll be redirected to install our Shopify app: LE – Store Migration & Import.

Here’s how it works:

  • During migration setup, instead of entering your Shopify store URL and API credentials, you’ll be redirected to install our Shopify migration app.

  • Log in to your Shopify admin and approve the required permissions.
  • Follow the in-app instructions to connect your store.
  • Once connected, you can proceed with the migration as guided.

This method is fully compliant with Shopify’s latest policies and is the supported way to run automated migrations to Shopify.

Case 2: Migrating from Shopify to another platform

Due to Shopify’s current API restrictions and the deprecation of legacy custom apps, LitExtension’s automated migration tool does not support migrations from Shopify at this time.
