How to Manually Migrate Shopify to Squarespace (DIY Method)

You can manually move a small store from Shopify to Squarespace. Follow these five steps:

• Step 1: Export Shopify data
• Step 2: Set up Squarespace
• Step 3: Import products and pages
• Step 4: Set up SEO and URLs
• Step 5: Final checks and launch

Step 1: Export Shopify Data

Back up your Shopify store. This is your foundation and safety net.

To export products:

• Step 1: Go to your Shopify Admin, click Products, and select Export.
• Step 2: Choose what to export (current page, all products, selected products, or a specific search).
• Step 3: Choose your CSV format (CSV for Excel/Numbers, or plain CSV for text editors).
• Step 4: Click Export products.

Next, back up the rest:

• Copy and paste your blog posts.
• Download all images and digital files.
• Export your URLs from Google Search Console.
• Note any custom apps, filters, or features you use.

Step 2: Set up Squarespace

Build your new site structure first. Save deep design tweaks for later.

• Choose a template: Pick a design that fits your brand.
• Organize pages: Set up your Home, About, Store, Blog, and Contact pages. Keep it simple.
• Add features: Add forms, galleries, and checkout tools.
• Check mobile: Ensure your site looks good on phones and tablets.

Step 3: Import Products & Pages

Import Products

• Go to the Squarespace Products panel, click Import, and download the CSV Template.
• Format your exported Shopify CSV to match this template.
• Go back to the Products panel, click Import, upload your new CSV, and click Save.

Note: If the upload fails, paste your data into a fresh spreadsheet and try again. Watch out for bad formatting like bullet points or weird characters.

Move Pages and Blogs

Squarespace cannot auto-import pages or blogs. You must do this manually:

• Copy and paste text into new Squarespace pages.
• Re-upload images directly to Squarespace (do not link to old Shopify images).
• Rebuild links, buttons, and forms.
• Publish blog posts one by one, keeping the original dates and authors.

Step 4: Set up SEO and URLs

Protect your search rankings and traffic:

• Map URLs: Match your old Shopify URLs to your new Squarespace URLs.
• Set up 301 Redirects: In Squarespace, go to Settings > Advanced > URL Mappings. Format them like this: /old-shopify-url -> /new-squarespace-url 301
• Update SEO: Manually add SEO titles and meta descriptions to all pages.
• Fix Images: Add descriptive alt text to every image.
• Submit Sitemap: Send your new sitemap to Google Search Console once live.

Step 5: Final Checks and Launch

Test everything carefully before you go live:

• Click every link on your site.
• Add a product to the cart and test the checkout.
• Look for broken links using a tool like Screaming Frog.
• Check mobile layouts for bugs.
• Set up Google Analytics and marketing tracking pixels.

When you are ready:

• Point your domain to Squarespace (or transfer the domain entirely).
• Watch your traffic, sales, and rankings closely for a few weeks.
