How to Migrate From Squarespace to WordPress (In 5 Steps)
Migrating from Squarespace to WordPress involves 5 key steps that ensure your content is transferred correctly and that your new site functions smoothly.
Step 1: Sign up for Hosting
- Choose a Hosting Provider: Research and select a hosting provider that suits your needs. Popular options include Bluehost, SiteGround, and WP Engine. Look for features like WordPress optimization, security, and customer support.
- Select a Hosting Plan: Most providers offer various plans. For a new WordPress site, a basic shared hosting plan is usually sufficient. You can upgrade later if your site grows.
- Register Your Domain: If you don’t already have a domain name, you can often register one directly through your hosting provider. If you have a domain with Squarespace, you may need to transfer it to your new host.
- Set Up Your Account: Follow the prompts from your hosting provider to create an account. You’ll set up your payment, domain, and other essential details here.
- Access Your cPanel: Once your account is set up, you’ll receive access to your hosting control panel, often referred to as cPanel. This is where you’ll manage your site, install WordPress, and perform other tasks.
Step 2: Install WordPress
- Access cPanel: Log in to your hosting account and navigate to cPanel.
- Find the WordPress Installer: Most hosting providers offer a one-click WordPress installation option, often found under sections like “Website” or “WordPress.”
- Begin Installation: Click on the WordPress installer and follow the prompts. You’ll need to choose your domain, enter your site name, and create an admin username and password.
- Complete the Installation: Once the installation is complete, you’ll receive a confirmation with your WordPress login URL. Bookmark this URL for easy access to your WordPress dashboard.
- Log in to WordPress: Use the credentials you created to log in to your WordPress dashboard. This is where you’ll manage your new site.
Step 3: Export Your Content From Squarespace
- Log in to Squarespace: Access your Squarespace account and navigate to the site you want to migrate.
- Access the Export Option: Go to Settings > Advanced > Import / Export.
- Export Your Site: Click on the Export button. Squarespace will prepare an export file, which is usually in XML format. Note that this export may not include all content types, such as images or certain page elements like products.
- Download the Export File: Once the export is ready, download the file to your computer. This file contains your pages, blog posts, and other essential content.
Step 4: Import Your Content to WordPress
- Access WordPress Import Tool: Log in to your WordPress dashboard, go to Tools > Import.
- Install the WordPress Importer Plugin: If prompted, install the WordPress Importer plugin. This tool allows you to import content from various platforms, including Squarespace.
- Upload the Export File: Choose the XML file you exported from Squarespace and upload it through the importer.
- Assign Authors: During the import process, you’ll be asked to assign authors. You can either map the content to existing users on your WordPress site or create new users.
- Complete the Import: Once you’ve assigned authors, start the import. Depending on the size of your site, this process may take a few minutes.
Step 5: Import Your Images to WordPress
- Configure the Plugin Settings
You can use Auto Upload Images plugin to import your images to WordPress. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New. Search for Auto Upload Images. Click Install Now, and then activate the plugin once it’s installed.
Once the plugin is activated, navigate to its settings page. This is usually found under Settings or as a new menu item in your WordPress dashboard. Note that this plugin doesn’t require much configuration. It will automatically upload images to your media library when you save a post or page.
- Run the Image Import Process
Go to Posts or Pages, open a page or post, and click Update or Save. The plugin will automatically detect external images and import them into your media library.
