About Our Client
Our client specializes in providing custom signage, banners, and display solutions that enhance brand visibility and communication. Their commitment to quality ensures that each product is crafted to meet the unique needs of businesses, regardless of size or industry.
With growth on the horizon, our client was searching for a platform that provided both advanced functionality and scalability. Shopify met these needs with a robust set of eCommerce features and flexible pricing options that align with their budget. Thus, they decided quickly to migrate from Volusion to Shopify to guarantee the business’ long-term success.
Our Client’s Requirements
In addition to the standard migration of data, such as orders, customers, and products, our client requested specific customizations to align with their business model. Their requirements included:
- Unified catalog pricing: On their previous Volusion platform, a single price was used as the default B2B (catalog) price. For the Shopify store, our client requested that this catalog price be maintained as the B2C price, with quantity discounts applied to both. This setup allowed for initial consistency across customer types, with plans to adjust the B2C pricing afterward.
- B2B customer approval system: In the Volusion setup, B2B customers were identified by an access key labeled as “Customer,” which allowed them to access catalog pricing. Non-approved customers were marked with an “N” under the access key. When migrating to Shopify, they would all be classified as B2C customers without B2B catalog access. Thus, the client required us to set up the B2B catalog access for the right customer group.
The Challenges
During the migration process, the client’s website experienced unexpected downtime due to their Microsoft server issue. This downtime prevented direct access to essential data, particularly the quantity pricing breakdown for products. As a result, our team had to spend additional time examining the export files, specifically the coupon and discount sections, to locate and confirm the necessary pricing information.
Our Solution
Given the challenge, our team still managed to address the catalog pricing requirements. From the exported file, we compiled the necessary catalog information and created a CSV file for the client. This file serves as a flexible tool for catalog pricing adjustments and can be easily updated by uploading it to the Shopify store.
Our team also provided clear, step-by-step instructions on how to upload this CSV file to the Shopify store, enabling the client to update their B2B pricing seamlessly. For the B2B customer approval system, we configured Shopify’s “Companies” setting to replace the previous customer tags. This solution allows the client to manage B2B and B2C customer distinctions, maintaining a setup similar to what they had on Volusion while taking full advantage of Shopify’s features.
