About Our Client
This case study focuses on a 25-year-old fashion brand renowned for its bold streetwear aesthetic and connection to action sports. They offer a diverse range of apparel and accessories, catering to both men and women with an eye for unique and expressive style.
As their brand continued to grow, they found managing their online store through the Salesforce Commerce Cloud dashboard increasingly difficult. That’s when they were drawn to Shopify Plus for its user-friendly interface, extensive app marketplace, and flexible customization option – all essential for their future eCommerce success.
Our Client’s Requirements
Besides the basic data migration (orders, customers, products, etc.), our client had the following custom requirements for the project:
- Deconstructing product variants into individual products: On Salesforce Commerce Cloud, products were stored as parent products with associated variants (e.g., a T-shirt available in multiple sizes and colors). The client required us to separate these variants into individual, standalone products on Shopify Plus (e.g., a Red T-shirt in size L as its own distinct product).
- Preserving product attributes as metafields: They also wanted to migrate product attributes from Salesforce Commerce Cloud into Shopify’s metafield structure.
- Migrating large XML files: Our client needed to update their database with the information contained in large XML files. These files ranged in size from 5-6 GB each, presenting a challenge for efficient processing and integration.
The Challenges
The migration journey wasn’t without its obstacles, but our team was prepared to overcome them. Here are some of the key challenges that we need to tackle:
- Potential product duplication: Separating product variants into individual products carries the risk of creating duplicate listings on Shopify Plus.
- Incomplete product information: The client’s existing product data on Salesforce Commerce Cloud lacked comprehensive descriptions for certain products or variants.
- Data inconsistencies in XML files: The client’s large XML files, containing crucial eCommerce data, exhibited some inconsistencies and missing information.
Our Solution
Migrating a complex product catalog and extensive data files required a tailored approach, and our Files Migration Service provided the ideal foundation. Our team employed meticulous mapping and cross-referencing techniques to prevent potential product duplication during the variants separation process. By doing this, we can ensure a clear and organized product catalog after migration.
Moving on to the product descriptions, our experts developed a custom command-line script to automate the quality assurance process. This script scanned each migrated product, identifying any instances of absent descriptions and flagging them for immediate attention. Thus, no product descriptions are left behind during migration.
Finally, to make sure all the information from the client’s large data files was correct, we carefully checked everything. Our team looked for any mistakes, missing details, or things that didn’t match up. We fixed these problems before moving the data to Shopify Plus. This way, we made sure everything was accurate and in order for a smooth launch of their new online store.
