About Our Client
Our client is a leading brand in the German leather goods market, renowned for their commitment to quality craftsmanship and timeless designs. For over a decade, they’ve attracted a loyal customer base who value enduring style and lasting quality in their elegant handbags, wallets, briefcases, and belts.
While their Magento Multi-Store setup provided a solid foundation for their online presence, they sought a platform that is easier to manage. Shopify is known for being very user-friendly, even for people without a lot of technical experience. This allows them to focus on what they do best: selling their products.
Our Client’s Requirements
Our client, who manages seven different Magento stores, needed a highly customized data migration to Shopify. Their requirements included:
- Targeted product migration: The client requested that product data be migrated from two sources: (1) one specific Magento store and (2) a spreadsheet containing a list of supplementary products.
- Comprehensive customer and order data migration: All customer and order data from all seven Magento stores was to be migrated to a single Shopify store.
- Additional spreadsheet column migration: We also needed to migrate two extra columns of data from the spreadsheet to Shopify because this information was missing from the client’s Magento stores.
The Challenges
This multi-source migration presents a unique set of challenges, primarily in handling product data from various sources and unifying customer information across multiple stores:
- Combining data from multiple sources: This involves matching products to the correct Shopify categories, handling variations, and resolving any discrepancies between the data sources – a process that requires meticulous attention to detail.
- Unifiying customer and order data: Ensuring each customer had a single, accurate profile and that their order histories were linked correctly was a big task. It took us more time to identify and merge duplicates, reconcile order details, and make sure everything was consistent.
Our Solution
The products migration required careful attention. First, we identified the unique store ID of the designated Magento store to ensure we were extracting the correct product information. Then, we imported these product IDs into our mapping system to verify accuracy and prevent duplicates. For the supplemental products listed in the spreadsheet, we imported and matched them to the Shopify platform using unique identifiers.
Moving on to the customer and order migration requirement, we successfully moved the data from all seven Magento stores to Shopify using our robust mapping techniques. This process combined all the customer information and order history then move it into one main database on Shopify.
