Migrate from GoDaddy to Shopify: Step-by-Step Guide (DIY Method)
This guide explains how to transfer website from GoDaddy to Shopify. This is a DIY method if you want to perform the migration yourself. Follow these steps to move your data, set up your new store, and launch.

Step 1: Clean and Export Your Data
Clean your GoDaddy data and export it to keep your information safe:
- Review your GoDaddy store data, including products, pages, blog posts, customers, orders, and SEO details.
- Delete outdated products, old customer accounts, and unused drafts to speed up the migration.
- Export your data using GoDaddy’s built-in tools or cPanel.
- Export your current URLs from your sitemap or Google Search Console. You will need these later for redirects.
- Save a backup copy of your exported files on a local drive and in cloud storage.
Step 2: Set Up Your Shopify Store
Create your basic Shopify store environment:
- Create a Shopify account and select a pricing plan.
- Choose a store theme. If you are not sure which one to use, start with Shopify’s default theme, Dawn.
- Configure your basic store settings.
Step 3: Import Data to Shopify
Move your exported GoDaddy data into Shopify:
- Make a copy of your GoDaddy CSV file to keep as a backup.
- Compare your GoDaddy CSV format to Shopify’s sample product CSV. Update your column headers to match Shopify’s requirements.

- Update the DNS settings to point to Shopify by setting the A record to
23.227.38.65and the CNAME record (www) toshops.myshopify.com. - In your Shopify Admin, go to Settings > Domains > Connect existing domain.
- Enter your domain name to verify the connection.
Option B: Transfer a domain from GoDaddy to Shopify
- Log into your GoDaddy account, open your domain settings, and turn off the domain lock.
- Get your authorization code from GoDaddy.
- Open your Shopify Admin, go to Settings > Domains, and select Transfer domain.
- Enter your domain name and authorization code.
- Pay for a one-year renewal to finish the process.
Step 5: Set Up Redirects and Launch
Finish your store setup and go live:
- Create 301 redirects: Go to Shopify Admin > Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects. Use the URL list you saved in Step 1 to point your old GoDaddy links to your new Shopify links. This prevents 404 errors.
- Optimize SEO: Add meta titles and descriptions to your Shopify products and pages. Submit your new
sitemap.xmlfile to Google Search Console. - Go live: Go to Shopify Admin > Online Store > Preferences and remove the store password. Announce your launch via email and social media to bring customers to your new store.
