Let’s start the osCommerce to WooCommerce migration. Once the migration process is kicked off, it will constantly run even when you turn off your browser.
The Complete Guide to osCommerce to WooCommerce Migration
Switching from osCommerce to WooCommerce is one of the most impactful platform decisions you can make for your online store, whether you are looking for better flexibility, a modern feature set, or a more scalable infrastructure. In this guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step guide to migrate from osCommerce to WooCommerce via three different approaches:
- Using LitExtension Automated tool
- Using LitExtension All-in-One Migration Service
- Manually export and import data from osCommerce to WooCommerce
Why Should You Migrate from osCommerce to WooCommerce?
osCommerce was a pioneering platform in its time, but it has fallen significantly behind modern eCommerce standards. If you’re still running your store on osCommerce, here’s why switching to WooCommerce is a decision worth making now.
1. WooCommerce offers a modern, flexible architecture
Built on WordPress–the world’s most widely used CMS, WooCommerce gives you full ownership of your store’s code, design, and data. Unlike osCommerce’s aging framework, WooCommerce supports headless commerce, REST API integrations, and a continuously updated core that keeps pace with evolving eCommerce demands.
2. It equips users with a significantly larger ecosystem of plugins and themes
osCommerce’s add-on library has stagnated over the years, leaving merchants with limited options for extending functionality. WooCommerce, by contrast, gives you access to thousands of actively maintained plugins and themes, covering everything from payments and shipping to subscriptions, memberships, and advanced analytics.
3. It provides better SEO capabilities out of the box
WooCommerce inherits the full SEO power of WordPress, including clean permalink structures, native support for plugins like Yoast SEO and Rank Math, and fast-loading page templates. Migrating from osCommerce to WooCommerce means your store is immediately better positioned to compete in organic search.
4. The total cost of ownership is lower
osCommerce often requires custom development to maintain or extend, an increasingly expensive proposition as fewer developers work with the platform. WooCommerce’s open-source model and massive developer community keep costs competitive, and most core functionality is available without premium licensing fees.
What to Prepare Before the osCommerce to WooCommerce Migration
Before you migrate from osCommerce to WooCommerce, taking care of a few critical preparation steps will save you time, prevent data loss, and ensure a significantly smoother transition. Here’s what you need to have in place before the migration begins.
- Create a full backup of your osCommerce database and all store files before starting the osCommerce to WooCommerce migration.
- Store the backup in a secure, off-server location so you have a clean restore point if anything goes wrong during the migration process.
- Identify and clean up any outdated, duplicate, or incomplete records, including discontinued products and invalid customer entries.
- Ensure your WooCommerce store is installed, configured, and accessible before the osCommerce to WooCommerce migration begins.
- If your osCommerce store has custom fields or special data, document these carefully before migration.
- Determine which osCommerce to WooCommerce migration approach best suits your needs.
How to Migrate osCommerce to WooCommerce with LitExtension Automated Tool
LitExtension’s automated migration tool is the fastest and most reliable way to migrate osCommerce to WooCommerce without any coding or technical expertise required. The entire process runs through a clean, guided interface, giving full control of what gets migrated, and your osCommerce store remains fully operational throughout. The only limitation to be aware of is that highly customized data or non-standard database fields may require additional configuration or expert assistance, which is where the All-In-One service becomes the stronger choice.
Before you begin, sign in to your LitExtension account using your registered email and password or your Google account. Once inside the dashboard, select Create Migration to get started.
Step 1. Set up your Source Cart and Target Cart
From the migration setup screen, select osCommerce as your Source Cart from the drop-down list and fill in your store URL. Since osCommerce is an open-source platform, you will need to download and install the LitExtension Connector to your store’s root folder. At this step, you can follow the on-screen video instructions to complete the installation. Once installed correctly, the notification “Connector was successfully installed” will appear.
Or, you can connect your osCommerce store to LitExtension Automated tool by using the FTP/SFTP method. Simply tick the STP/SFTP option in the “Please choose your preferred connection method” section. Then, fill in the required information such as Host, Port, Username, Password, and Directory Path. Once finished, click the Upload Connector to proceed.
Now, let’s move on to the Target Cart setup. Select WooCommerce from the drop-down list, and fill in your Username and Password. Alternatively, you can choose to Manual Setup the connector or upload using FTP/SFTP, following the same steps as above.
Step 2. Select data to migrate
On the configuration screen, select the data entities you want to transfer from osCommerce to WooCommerce. LitExtension supports migration of:
- Products
- Categories
- Customers
- Orders
- Reviews
- Blog Posts
- Pages
- Coupons
If you have custom data that falls outside these standard entities, click the Support button to leave a message for the LitExtension migration team. An expert will respond and advise on the best approach for handling your specific data requirements.
You can also configure Additional Options at this stage to enhance your migration output by hovering over each option in the interface to view inline guidance, or refer to the video tutorial available on the same screen. Before proceeding, make sure to map your language settings and order statuses so they appear correctly in your WooCommerce store after migration.
Step 3. Perform full osCommerce to WooCommerce migration
Once your configuration is complete, you have two options. You can run a Demo Migration first to preview how LitExtension handles a sample of your store data, recommended if you want to verify accuracy before committing to the full transfer. Alternatively, click Skip Demo Migration to proceed directly to the full migration from osCommerce to WooCommerce.
After confirming your selection and completing checkout, LitExtension will begin transferring all your data completely in the background. There is no need to keep your browser or PC active while the migration runs. More importantly, your osCommerce store stays live and fully operational throughout the entire process. No downtime, no disruption to your customers, no interruption to your business.
How to Migrate osCommerce to WooCommerce with LitExtension All-In-One Migration Service
For merchants who want a completely hands-off experience, LitExtension’s All-In-One Migration Service is the most thorough and reliable way to switch from osCommerce to WooCommerce. Instead of managing the migration yourself, a dedicated team of experts takes full ownership of the entire process, from initial consultation to post-migration support. This service is especially recommended for stores with large data volumes, custom fields, complex configurations, or merchants who simply cannot afford any risk of data loss or misalignment.
Step 1. Technical consultation with LitExtension experts
Your osCommerce to WooCommerce migration begins with a personalized technical consultation led by LitExtension’s expert team. During this stage, our specialists take time to fully understand your osCommerce store’s structure, size, and specific business requirements. We assess all existing data, including products, orders, customers, blogs, and any custom fields, to identify exactly what needs to be migrated and how.
If your osCommerce setup includes unique workflows or non-standard custom fields, our team documents every detail carefully. This ensures nothing is overlooked or misaligned when the data lands on your new WooCommerce store. By identifying potential challenges at the outset, we build an osCommerce to WooCommerce migration strategy tailored specifically to your store, so you can move forward with full confidence that your project is in experienced hands.
Step 2. Pre-migration setup
Once the consultation is complete, our team moves into the pre-migration setup phase. This stage focuses on establishing secure connections between your osCommerce store and your new WooCommerce store, and preparing both platforms for an accurate, error-free data transfer. In this step, we gather all essential information, such as store URLs, admin credentials, and technical configuration settings, to set up a stable and secure connection between the two platforms. We also verify that your WooCommerce store is properly configured to receive the incoming data.
From there, we move into the data mapping process. This is where we align your osCommerce data structure with WooCommerce’s format. Every critical element is mapped and validated before migration begins, laying a solid foundation for a clean and reliable data transfer from osCommerce to WooCommerce.
Step 3. Demo migration running
Before transferring your full store, our team runs a demo migration to verify that everything is properly configured for the osCommerce to WooCommerce migration. A representative sample of your osCommerce data is migrated to your WooCommerce store, allowing us to confirm data structure, field mapping, and formatting across products, customers, and orders.
After the demo migration runs, our team conducts a thorough internal review of the results. Any inconsistencies, misalignments, or formatting issues are identified and resolved before we proceed. This step ensures that the full migration runs cleanly and that your WooCommerce store receives your data exactly as intended.
Step 4. Perform full osCommerce to WooCommerce migration
Once the demo results have been reviewed and approved, we proceed with the full osCommerce to WooCommerce migration. All selected data is securely and completely transferred into your new WooCommerce store, following the customized migration plan built during the earlier stages.
Your osCommerce store remains live and fully operational throughout this process, no downtime, no maintenance mode, no disruption to your customers or daily operations. The full migration runs automatically on LitExtension’s secure cloud infrastructure, entirely in the background. Once the transfer is complete, our team notifies you so you can begin reviewing your new WooCommerce store and move forward with post-migration tasks.
Step 5. osCommerce to WooCommerce migration results testing
After the full migration is complete, our team enters a dedicated testing phase to verify that all data has been transferred accurately and that your new WooCommerce store reflects your original osCommerce store structure with full integrity.
We conduct a thorough review of all critical elements included in the migration scope. If any inconsistencies, missing fields, or formatting issues are detected, they are resolved immediately. Once everything has been verified and confirmed, we deliver a detailed project outcome report so you can review the final migration results with complete confidence.
Step 6. Post-migration tasks
Because your osCommerce store stays active during the migration process, it may continue to receive new orders, customer sign-ups, or product updates while the data transfer is running. To ensure your WooCommerce store stays fully up to date, LitExtension provides the following post-migration services:
- Free and unlimited Recent Data Migration: Covers any new data added during the migration window, provided it represents less than 5% of the initial migration volume
- Free 2 Re-migration: Two full re-migrations are included if any issues require a clean restart
- Free and unlimited Smart Update: Keeps your migrated data updated with any changes made to your osCommerce store after the initial transfer
Step 7. Customer support post-migration
Even after your osCommerce to WooCommerce migration is complete, LitExtension’s support does not stop there. For up to 60 days following the migration, our dedicated Customer Support Team remains available to answer your questions and resolve any technical issues happened aftermath.
Manually Transfer Data from osCommerce to WooCommerce
Manual migration from osCommerce to WooCommerce is a viable option if you have a small store, a solid technical background, and full control over your hosting environment. However, the limitations are significant since the process is time-consuming, error-prone, and requires you to handle data formatting, field mapping, and import configuration entirely on your own. There is no automated error detection, no rollback safety net, and no guarantee of data integrity if a step is missed.
For large stores or merchants without technical experience, this approach carries real risk. In this case, LitExtension automated migration service is strongly recommended as the safer, faster, and more reliable alternative. That said, if you still choose to proceed manually, here is a complete step-by-step breakdown of how to transfer data from osCommerce to WooCommerce.
Step 1. Back up your osCommerce store
Before making any changes, create a full backup of your osCommerce store. To do so:
- Log in to your osCommerce admin panel and navigate to Admin Dashboard > Tools > Database Backup.
- Run a full database backup and download the file to a secure, off-server location.
- Back up all store files, including product images and configuration files via FTP or your hosting control panel’s file manager.
Step 2. Export data from osCommerce
Unfortunately, osCommerce doesn’t offer a built-in data export function, so you’ll need to install a third-party app or hire a developer to help with osCommerce store export. Which ever path you choose, make sure to export your CSV file in UTF-8 format to match WooCommerce’s requirements.
Step 3. Reformat your CSV files for WooCommerce
WooCommerce has specific column name and data format requirements for CSV imports. Therefore, to ensure a smooth osCommerce to WooCommerce migration, you must reformat your exported osCommerce CSV files to match WooCommerce’s expected structure. Additionally, don’t forget to remove any columns that do not have a corresponding WooCommerce field to avoid error during the import.
Step 4. Import products into WooCommerce
In your WordPress dashboard, go to WooCommerce > Products. Select Import at the top of the Products page. You will be taken to a multi-step import page–the first step is to upload your CSV file. Click Choose File, select your prepared product CSV, and click Continue. WooCommerce will attempt to automatically match your CSV columns to the corresponding WooCommerce product fields. Review these mappings carefully, adjust any mismatches, then click Run the Importer to begin the product import.
Step 5. Import customers and orders into WooCommerce
Unfortunately, WooCommerce does not include a native customer and order import feature out of the box. To perform this action, you will need to install a third-party plugin and follow their guide to import these entities.
Post-Migration Actions for osCommerce to WooCommerce Migration
Completing the data transfer is not the finish line–what you do immediately after your osCommerce to WooCommerce migration determines whether your store launches cleanly or carries hidden problems into production. Work through every item on this checklist before pointing your domain to your new WooCommerce store.
1. Verify migrated data accuracy
Cross-check a representative sample of products, customer accounts, and orders against your osCommerce source data. Confirm that product names, descriptions, SKUs, prices, inventory levels, and images have all transferred correctly. Even a small data mapping error at this stage can cause fulfillment issues, pricing discrepancies, or customer trust problems down the line.
2. Test the full checkout flow
Place several test orders on your new WooCommerce store end to end, from product page to order confirmation. Check page load times, checkout performance, and database response times with full production data. Verify that payment gateways are processing correctly, tax calculations are accurate, and shipping rules are firing as expected.
3. Set up 301 redirects from osCommerce URLs
osCommerce and WooCommerce use different URL structures, which means every product, category, and page URL will change. Map all your old URLs to their new ones using 301 redirects, this tells search engines your content has moved permanently and protects your existing search rankings. Use 301 redirects, never 302 (temporary). Skipping this step might result in 404 errors across your site and measurable traffic loss.
4. Submit your updated XML sitemap to Google Search Console
Regenerate your XML sitemap after migration and submit it to Google Search Console. Your sitemap tells Google which URLs to crawl–an outdated sitemap pointing to pre-migration URLs delays indexation of your new pages. Also verify your Search Console property and confirm there are no crawl errors or coverage issues flagged after submission.
5. Run a full site crawl to identify broken links
fter setting up redirects, crawl your site to find any broken links–tools like Screaming Frog or Ahrefs Site Audit make it easy to spot missing pages and images. Fix them right away to keep your visitors on track.

We recently performed our third data migration (from osCommerce to WooCommerce) using LitExtension and this one was the biggest so far (over 3,500 orders, over 1,200 products and over 4,000 customers). Ralph at LitExtension guided us through the process and answered any queries quickly and accurately. The migration only took a matter of hours and the whole experience was stress-free. The few small issues we had were dealt with quickly by Ralph. We would definitely recommend LitExtension!
We needed to migrate a site using osCommerce to WordPress/WooCommerce. It was easy to set up and run, and when there was a problem with some of the data getting over correctly, LitExtension edited the code, ran it again and all worked. Very impressed with the level of service and quality of the product. Will use again… I have at least 1/2 dozen sites migrating from osCommerce to WooCommerce in the next year.
The LitExtension team’s initial consultation was incredibly insightful. They asked all the right questions to understand my osCommerce store’s complexities, and it showed in the seamless transition to WooCommerce.
