Both Magento and Shopify are powerful and enjoy a high reputation in the E-commerce Community. However, there are many differences between the two platforms you need to notice when you start an online store or process Magento Shopify migration.
This is the biggest difference between Magento vs Shopify, Shopify is a hosted platform while Magento is self-hosted. If you use Magento either paid or non-paid version, you’ll have to pay for your own hosting which can be anywhere from $4-$1000 a month depending on the size of your business. This means an additional investment of time and money, and you may be confused by trying to find which hosting provider is good for you.
A hosted platform, like Shopify, takes care of all your hosting worries for you. All hosting costs are included within your monthly plan with no extra effort or expense required. Moreover, Shopify hosting is well-equipped to deal with any size of business, from small to large.
Sadly but the second thing you need to notice is that if you look for a migration from Magento to Shopify or begin a Shopify is that Shopify only allows 100 variants in maximum for each product. For example, you have these following attributes for product 1: color (color 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), size (1, 2, 3), for product 2: pattern (1,2,3), size (1,2), now the total variant you have is 21.
If you have more than 100 variants on Magento site, when moving to Shopify, only 100 variants are transferred. If you worry about that, just contact LitExtension Support Team to get more details and solution.
Similar to variant limitation, tax cannot be migrated to Shopify from any other platforms due to Shopify restriction. However it can be created and configured easily on Shopify admin site.
In many other sites like Magento, you have both parent and children categories where your product will be located with corresponding topics to help shoppers search easily. For example, your site has Winter Collection as parent category including Coat and Sweater (Children categories). However, on Shopify, your items will be organized by collections only. It means that all items are under their respective collection. When you perform Magento to Shopify migration, Winter, Coat and Sweater will exist equivalently as three collections.
